Dr. Adam Parks has been awarded the Raymond L. Roberts Emergency Medicine Young Researcher’s Grant (EMYRG) for their project titled “The Atlantic Canadian Emergency Medicine Airway Interventions Registry and Observational Database (AIRO Database): a multicenter, observational database for airway management in Atlantic Canadian Emergency Departments.”

Over the past two years, Dr. Parks has collaborated with Dr. Katrina Hurley from IWK and Drs. Kavish Chandra and Jayanand Mekwan from New Brunswick successfully establish a database to address multiple questions:

1. Are emergency physicians able to safely and effectively manage patients’ airways using an “awake” technique (i.e., when the patient is not given any sedating medications)?
2. How do critical care paramedics working in the emergency department compare with emergency physicians when it comes to successfully intubating patients?
3. How do emergency physicians feel about receiving regular feedback on how they compare to their peers with respect to airway management?

The funding from EMYRG will help analyze this extensive dataset, provide research personnel support to ensure complete retrospective data and facilitate knowledge translation.
