Dr. Patrick Fok

Dr. Patrick Fok is an Assistant Professor in Dalhousie University’s Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of EMS. He completed his MDCM-PhD training at McGill University and then went on to do  his residency training at McGill University’s Emergency Medicine training program.  Following residency, Dr. Fok completed advanced training in Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHARM) with MedSTAR Emergency Retrieval Service in Adelaide, Australia.  He works as an emergency physician at the Halifax Infirmary, Medical Communications Centre Physician for Emergency Health Services (EHS),  and transport physician for EHS LifeFlight.

Dr. Fok conducts research in prehospital and retrieval medicine, non-opioid analgesia, and biomarker development.   His prehospital research is focused on optimizing transport decisions and airway management.  Specifically, Dr. Fok conducts research on prehospital transport decisions for patients who are suffering from acute strokes and require endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) as well as those who are living with chronic kidney disease.  His retrieval medicine research focuses on the outcomes of intubations performed by Critical Care Transport/Retrieval Teams.  Dr. Fok has a special interest in exploring the use of non-opioid analgesia to treat acute pain in emergency department and prehospital patients.  His current quality improvement study aims to increase the use of femoral nerve blocks for ED patients with acute hip fractures.

Dr. Fok is the Nova Scotia provincial co-lead for the Canadian COVID-19 Emergency Department Rapid Response Network (CCEDRRN) and the Canadian Emergency Department Research Network (CEDRN).   Dr. Fok is a co-Investigator in the Atlantic Canada Together Enhancing Acute Stroke Treatment (ACTEAST): Improving Access and Efficiency of Treatment trial, a quality improvement project aiming to improve time to endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) for Nova Scotian patients suffering from an acute stroke.

Dr. Fok is accepting students for research supervision.
