Dr. Ron Stewart was a visionary leader who made incalculable advances in paramedic practice throughout his career.  He selflessly worked to improve prehospital care for patients both abroad and in Nova Scotia.  The goals of the Dr. Ron Stewart EMS Clinical Scientist position embody all that Dr. Stewart strived for, supporting paramedic-led research and their pursuit of an academic career and leading the field of EMS through developing a robust research program.

As the inaugural Clinical Scientist, Dr. Patrick Fok outlines a forward-looking vision to strengthen EMS research through innovation in data, education, collaboration, and scientific leadership.

Central to this vision is the development of a robust data infrastructure that leverages Nova Scotia’s transition to electronic medical records. By linking prehospital EMS data with hospital, primary care, and diagnostic systems, researchers will gain unprecedented insight into patient outcomes. This integrated approach will support high-quality research, enable evaluation of programs such as community paramedicine and nurse-led triage, and lay the foundation for a responsive EMS learning health system capable of continuously improving care.

Equally important is the commitment to training the next generation of EMS researchers. Investments in mentorship, funding, and academic pathways will empower paramedics to pursue research careers and take on leadership roles. Through partnerships with Dalhousie University, including opportunities for graduate supervision, the program will support paramedics in developing the skills needed to advance both clinical practice and scientific discovery.

The establishment of a graduate specialization in EMS science further expands this vision by attracting interdisciplinary learners and fostering collaboration across departments such as geriatrics, neurology, engineering, and nursing. This initiative positions Dalhousie and the Department of Emergency Medicine as a leading hub for EMS education and research.

Finally, expanding national and international collaborations will enhance research impact and funding opportunities, enabling participation in large-scale, multi-jurisdictional studies. By fostering strong partnerships and a culture of knowledge sharing, the program aims to elevate EMS research on a global stage.

Together, these efforts reflect Dr. Stewart’s enduring legacy and establish a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program of EMS Research Excellence dedicated to improving patient care and advancing the field.
