Dr. Kerstin de Wit
Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Emergency Venous Thromboembolism
Professor in Emergency Medicine, Clinician Investigator Program Director
Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine, Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario
Kerstin de Wit holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Emergency Venous Thromboembolism and is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Queen’s University. She works clinically as an emergency physician and thrombosis physician at Kingston Health Sciences.
Dr de Wit trained in internal medicine, emergency medicine and research in the UK. She completed a Thrombosis Fellowship in Ottawa in 2013. Since then, she has worked in both emergency medicine and thrombosis. She leads a research program which focuses on the diagnosis of bleeding and clotting disorders in the emergency department and is funded by CIHR.
Dr de Wit is the Queen’s University Clinician Investigator Program Director, and the Research Director for the Department of Emergency Medicine

The Keynote Speaker for the 2023 East Coast Research Day was Dr. Corinne Hohl “Emergency Medicine, Science, and the Rocky Road to Learning Health Systems.”
Dr. Jason Emsley won the Top Research Award for his presentation on “Comparison of Symptoms Associated With SARS-CoV-2 Variants Among Children in Canada.”
Dr. James Nunn won the Doug Sinclair Resident Research Award for his presentation on “Epidemiology and Predictors of Mortality in Burn-related Major Trauma: An 18-year Retrospective Cohort Study.”
Allyson Evans was the first recipient for the Eleanor Fitzpatrick Award in Emergency Medicine for her presentation on “A Comparison of Rural Versus Urban Traumatic Injury Mortality in Nova Scotia 2011-2020.”

The 22nd Annual Emergency Medicine Research Day
The Emergency Department Annual Research Day was held on May 8, 2019 in Guild Hall at the Atlantica Hotel from 0900 to 1600. There were 17 presentations by residents, RIM students, physicians, paramedics and staff.
We were honoured to welcome Dr. Riyad Abu-Laban as this year’s “Dr. John Ross Distinguished Scholar”. Dr. Abu-Laban is an Emergency Physician at the Vancouver General Hospital, an Associate Professor and Research Director in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UBC. Dr. Abu-Laban presented “The Evolution of Canadian Emergency Medicine Research.”
The Dr. Doug Sinclair Resident Research Award was presented to two recipients this year, Dr. James Gould for his presentation “Potential candidates for emergency department (ED) initiated extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) in a Canadian institution.” and Dr. Lucy Patrick for her presentation “Simulation-based Interprofessional Trauma Education for Pre-licensure Health Professions Students at Dalhousie University.”
The Top Research Award was presented to Dr. Peter Vanberkel for his presentation “Determining Ambulance Destinations in the Presence of Offload Delay Using a Markov Decision Process.”

The 21st Annual Emergency Medicine Research Day
The Emergency Department Annual Research Day was held on May 9, 2018 in the Commons Room at the Atlantica Hotel from 0800 to 1600. There were 26 presentations by residents, RIM students, physicians, paramedics and staff. This year the event was live streamed.
The Dr. Doug Sinclair Resident Research Award was presented to Dr. Mandy Peach for “The ‘SHOC-ED’ Patient’: Does Point of Care Ultrasonography Improve Diagnostic Accuracy in Emergency Department Patients with Undifferentiated Hypotension?”
The Top Research Award was presented to Dr. David Petrie for “FLO on Flow: Front Line Ownership of Emergency Department, Hospital, and Health System Patient Flow – A Novel Approach to ED Overcrowding.”

The 20th Anniversary of Emergency Medicine Research Day
The Emergency Department Annual Research Day was held on May 10, 2017 in the Commons Room at the Atlantica Hotel from 0800 to 1500. There were 24 presentations by residents, RIM Students, physicians, paramedics and staff.
We were honoured to welcome Dr. Eddy Lang as this year’s “Dr. John Ross Distinguished Scholar”. Dr. Lang is the Academic Department Head and a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary, and the Clinical Department Head for Emergency Medicine, Calgary Zone, Alberta Health Services.
The Dr. Doug Sinclair Resident Research Award was presented to Dr. Adam Harris for “ED Procedural Sedation in the Elderly”.
The Top Research Award was presented to Dr. Trevor Jain for “Comparison of UAV Technology versus no UAV Technology in Identification of Hazards at a MCI Scenario in Primary Care Paramedic Students”
